Transfer Pathways/Advising Guides
MCC has many guides that show which MCC courses should be taken to prepare for a smooth transfer to specific four-year schools and majors. Local college and university information can be found on the Transfer Services website under “College Info and Transfer Guides“.
There is also a link to “College Info and Transfer Guides” on a student’s Degree Works; look under “Links.”
Additional guides for SUNY ESF, SUNY Cortland, SUNY Upstate Medical, Canisius University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, some programs at Cornell University, and others can be found on the Transfer Agreements webpage.
For some schools, MCC has Transfer Pathway Guides that are unique advising guides tailored for specific majors at specified colleges. A suggested GPA for transfer is included. Students still need to apply to the 4-year college as they are finishing up at MCC.
SUNY Brockport has MCC to Brockport Degree Pathways that outline all four years: 2 years of coursework at MCC; 2 years of coursework at Brockport.
Transfer guides can be different than Degree Works. Sometimes there can be financial aid implications that need to be addressed. Bachelor degree completion may take longer than four years depending on prerequisite courses needed, course sequencing, and/or curriculum of the 4-year program. Transfer guides should be regularly reviewed along with a student’s Degree Works Worksheet.
What is a “Competitive” Transfer Pathway?
- Some guides with RIT, St. John Fisher, and the University of Rochester are designated as “Competitive Transfer Pathways.” These offer more of an admissions guarantee with the 4-year institution and/or a shortened admissions application.
- They have specific entrance requirements and have unique coding in Degree Works (ex. OT36).
- These programs may have limited seats for transfer students at the 4-year institution, require cross-registration, and/or need specialized advising for a smooth transfer.
- Students interested in a Competitive Transfer Pathway must request an MCC program change request and meet specific entrance requirements to be formally accepted.
Competitive Programs include:
- All U of R guides
- Nursing at St. John Fisher
- The following majors at RIT: Engineering Science (computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical, & microelectronic), Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Imaging Science.
For those accepted (as indicated by their MCC major): continuous, full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours each semester) is required. Student contact information will be shared with the 4-year institution. Students will need to complete a transfer application, typically done prior to the start of their last semester at MCC. Please note that students are accepted into the Competitive Transfer Pathway if their MAJOR indicates this code. If only the PATHWAY indicates the unique code, they are not officially in the Competitive Transfer Pathway.
If not accepted into the MCC Competitive Transfer Pathway, students can still follow the advising guide and apply to the transfer university.
Please note that while every effort is made to ensure the information in these guides is accurate, students are advised to contact the transfer institution to make sure the curriculum has not changed.
Questions should be directed to Rebecca Mack or Alyce Lew in the Career Services office at MCC.
